  • CONTRAINDICATIONS:

    Never take DIAMENIL LP:

    • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to metformin or any of the other ingredients in this medication (see the “COMPOSITION” section).

    • If you have liver or kidney problems (glomerular filtration rate less than 45 mL/min).

    • If you have uncontrolled diabetes, accompanied, for example, by severe hyperglycemia (excessively high blood sugar levels), nausea, vomiting, dehydration, rapid weight loss, or ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is a condition characterized by a buildup of substances called “ketone bodies” in the blood, which can lead to diabetic precoma. Symptoms include, in particular, stomach pain, rapid and deep breathing, drowsiness, or breath with an unusual fruity odor.

    • If you have lost too much fluid (dehydration), for example due to persistent or severe diarrhea, or if you have vomited several times in a row. Dehydration can lead to kidney problems that may put you at risk for lactic acidosis (see the section

    “Warnings and Precautions”).

    • If you have a serious infection, such as a lung or bronchial infection, or a kidney infection. Severe infections can lead to kidney problems that may put you at risk of lactic acidosis (see the “Warnings and Precautions” section).

    • If you are being treated for acute heart failure or have recently had a heart attack, if you have severe circulatory problems (such as shock), or if you have difficulty breathing. This can lead to a lack of oxygen supply to the tissues, which may put you at risk of lactic acidosis (see the “Warnings and Precautions” section).

    • If you drink a lot of alcohol. If any of the above apply to you, talk to your doctor before you start taking this medication.

Be sure to ask your doctor for advice if:

    • You are scheduled to undergo an X-ray or CT scan that may require the injection of an iodine-based contrast agent into your bloodstream.

    • You are scheduled to undergo major surgery. You must stop taking DIAMENIL LP for a certain period of time before and after such tests or surgical procedures.

Your doctor will decide whether or not you need replacement therapy during this period. It is important that you follow your doctor’s instructions exactly.
